Certain hotel chains in the Caribbean suffered, and a handful have closed for 6-12 months for repairs. This is significant because tourism is the region’s most important economic driver according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization. The coastal area is vulnerable to hurricanes but this is also what makes it so beautiful.

Kenya was fairly unique! I went with Lifestraw to deliver clean drinking water to villages. It had been amazing and unlike anywhere else I have seen — Very surreal to awaken and see giraffes and elephants from the roof of the hotel in the distance.

The ancient ruins of Hisarya are located just 45 minutes from the city of Plovdiv. Once known as Diocletianopolis, this ancient Roman town was built atop a preexisting Thracian settlement, and is home to some of the country’s best-preserved Roman walls and gates. Among the ruins are baths, city walls, streets, and an amphitheater. Apart from the ruins, Hisarya is known for having several spa hotels. WATCH VIDEO

There were also notes of flavors throughout, which elevated it to another level. One of my favorite things about the poultry is how fresh it is. In Suriname, meals is seldom, if ever, frozen, so you know you are always eating something that was killed and butchered. This makes a enormous difference in the taste!

Souvlaki- don’t call them kebabs, they are souvlaki! Chunks of pork and chicken skewered and grilled. Cypriot souvlaki is prepared with little to no seasoning while Greek souvlaki is typically marinated and seasoned before being grilled. This is where the tzatziki lathering is appropriate.

The Victoria Street Market, also known as the Indian Market, is the perfect place to get your Durban souvenirs. Pick up some Indian curry powder or spice packets to take home with you. I especially loved browsing the meat, seafood, and produce market on the ground floor. There are also a few vendors selling handmade African crafts such as paintings, sculptures, and masks. The Victoria Street Market is open from 8am to 6pm (Monday-Saturday); 10am to 4pm (Sunday and public holidays).

And then there was Africa. We spent twenty-two days exploring the entire country of Malawi, which is known as the “Warm Heart of Africa.” A 15-hour flight on South African Airways transplanted me into an African wonderland. The friendly culture, stunning crafts, unforgettable wildlife safaris and the awe-inspiring Lake Malawi left an impression on me that I can’t shake. It’s definitely in the top 3 of places I have been so far.
